As a unique focal point of the store, Utopia Goods was commissioned to create a one-of-a-kind wall tapestry. A piece that marries the iconic Cartier panther with the untamed beauty of the West Australian landscape. This handcrafted artwork, now on display, was over a year in the making and stands as a testament to artisan craftsmanship, dedication, and exquisite attention to detail.
The Creation of a Masterpiece
The process behind this tapestry is as compelling as the artwork itself. It began with a hand-illustrated painting by Bruce Slorach, co-founder of Utopia Goods. Known for his exceptional ability to capture the essence of the Australia’s flora and fauna, Bruce’s initial illustration brought Cartier’s vision to life in vivid, organic form. The hand-painted design depicts the Cartier panther within an authentically Australian scene, blending Cartier’s timeless icon with native flora and fauna that are distinctly Western Australian.
Bringing French Aubusson Style to Australia
The tapestry is woven in the traditional Aubusson style, a technique celebrated for its intricate detailing and durability. Aubusson tapestries date back to 16th-century France and are recognised for their luxurious flat weave.
